The Topic

Have you ever wondered about the Internet?

What is it really?
Where did it begin and how does it work?

Who controls it?
Where can it go wrong and where has it gone wrong?

What's my IP address?
Can anyone read my messages?

What really is the Web and Social Media? And who's selling my Data?
How does it affect Humanity?

Why is your fridge talking to a Nuclear Power Plant across the Internet?

These are just some of the questions that will be answered.

The internet has forever changed the way we live and defines our time, the Information Age. In our connected world the lines between borders, nationalities and languages fade away. Through the power of the Internet, Citizens, Researchers, Students, Friends and Families can be more closely connected than ever.

Yet also connected are Nations Militaries, Criminals, Refrigerators, Power stations, Aircrafts, Ships, Door locks, Baby Monitors and many other sometimes mundane elements of Society. Technological Progress carries risks and costs.

In the Modern Digital Economy, Data & Information is a commodity. Those who can hold it, control it and shape it, can influence the World. Truth can become lost in an avalanche of opinions, ads and ‘clickbait’.

According to Clarke’s Laws it is said that any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic and that a magician never reveals his secret.

This presentation will demystify the magic inner workings of the Internet and show the dangers that lie beyond.

The Presentation will be given by at the Swakopmund Museum on the 26th of March at 18:00.

It is designed, to be accessible, for anyone with a curious mind, technical experience not required.
