On Thursday the 24th of January 2019 at 7pm we present the lecture “Klimwandel im Beispiel Sylt” in the lecture hall of the Swakopmund Museum. The speaker will be presenting in German.

The Topic

Storms and floods in some places; Dryness and lack of drinking water in other areas. Climate changes seem to occur in ever shorter periods of time.

The Sylt geologist Dr. Ekkehard Klatt’s lecture deals with these effects on the future of the island of Sylt. First, a look back at the shape and size of the island at the time of the last “Grote Mandränke” in 1632. Thereafter, recent measurements show how much storm surges and sea-level rise have had on coastal losses.

The predictions and future scenarios of international scientists and climate researchers, who predict a rather moderate or even gloomy future for the coastal inhabitants on the basis of different model calculations, don’t go unmentioned.

At the end of this highly topical lecture, you will take home important new insights into the expected changes and the protective measures already taken for the preservation of the island of Sylt.
